Today's Pre-Market Movers & News [Thursday, January 7th, 2021]

Good morning traders and investors of the wallstreetbets sub! Welcome to Thursday. Here are your pre-market movers & news this AM-

Today's Top Headlines for Thursday, January 7th, 2021

1. Dow set to add to Wednesday’s record despite Capitol turmoil

  • U.S. stock futures rose Thursday, a day after the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high despite the turmoil at the Capitol. Early Thursday, outgoing President Donald Trump said in a statement there “will be an orderly transition” of power, shortly after Congress confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s win.
  • Economists expect an increase in initial jobless claims, when the Labor Department reports its weekly numbers at 8:30 a.m. ET. With the seven-day average of new daily U.S. Covid infections spiking to a record high, first-time filings for unemployment benefits are seen rising by 28,000 to 815,000 for the week ended Jan. 2.
  • Ahead of Friday’s government employment report, the ADP’s look at December jobs trends at U.S. companies showed a contraction in private-sector positions for the first time since the early days of the coronavirus. Throughout most of the pandemic, the ADP estimates have been below the final government count.

2. 10-year Treasury yield above 1%; bitcoin above $38,000

  • The 10-year Treasury yield remained above 1% on Thursday morning after projected wins for Democrats in both Senate runoff elections in Georgia. Lightening up on bonds, pushing prices down and yields up, investors bought riskier assets like stocks and bitcoin.
  • The world’s largest cryptocurrency smashed through the $38,000 mark to hit a record high on Thursday as it continued its massive rally. Bitcoin has been up about 29% in the first days of 2021 and is up 380% over the past 12 months.

3. Congress confirms Biden as next president

  • Congress early Thursday confirmed the Electoral College vote for Biden, a day after Trump supporters breached the Capitol in a chaotic effort to avoid the formal recognition that the president lost the election. Shortly after the confirmation, White House spokesman Dan Scavino tweeted Trump’s statement, which promised “an orderly transition on January 20th,” the day of Biden’s inauguration, but also perpetuated the baseless claim that he actually won.
  • Congress’ process of counting Electoral College votes was interrupted Wednesday afternoon when rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol building. A woman who was among the invaders was shot and killed by Capitol Police. Three other people died from medical emergencies.

4. U.S. trade group asks Pence to ‘seriously consider’ invoking 25th Amendment

  • The National Association of Manufacturers, a trade organization representing 14,000 U.S. companies, called on Vice President Mike Pence to “seriously consider” invoking the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to remove Trump from office. Jay Timmons, CEO of the manufacturers group, is a former executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Two Democratic U.S. representatives worked on a letter to Pence requesting he invoke the amendment.
  • Members of Trump’s Cabinet issued harsh rebukes of the violence that unfolded at the Capitol. The officials, however, stopped short of criticizing the president, who had urged his supporters to take action at a pro-Trump rally Wednesday morning.
  • An administration official confirmed to CNBC’s Eamon Javers that National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien and Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger are considering resigning over the insurrection. Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff for first lady Melania Trump, and Sarah Matthews, White House deputy press secretary, both resigned Wednesday.
  • Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s former chief of staff, announced on CNBC on Thursday he is resigning as special envoy to Northern Ireland.

5. Democrats win the majority in the Senate

  • During the Capitol siege, Democrat Jon Ossoff was projected as the winner of the second of two Senate runoff elections Tuesday in Georgia. The defeat of Republican David Perdue, whose Senate term expired Sunday, coupled with Democrat Raphael Warnock’s projected victory over Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, splits the 100 Senate right down the middle. However, Democrats take over the majority as Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would be the tie-breaking vote. After Biden’s inauguration, Democrats will control the Senate, House and the White House.

Today's Pre-Market Movers & News [Thursday, January 7th, 2021]

Good morning traders and investors of the smallstreetbets sub!

A Paladin's Final Sacrifice

This is one of my favorite stories from my time playing DnD, primarily because it emphasizes every player having a fully developed character arc, both in and out of character.
TL;DR: An unexpected shot in the dark becomes one of the greatest RP moments in my life.
The setting: A second run through of Curse of Strahd. Be warned there are technically spoilers for that campaign I guess.
The characters of our story (though not their player names) are as follows.
Current DM: The DM of this adventure
Luke: A lazy, self-centered Air Genasi Swashbuckler Rogue, also DM of our last run of Curse of Strahd
Garrett: A Half-Elf Wild Magic Sorcerer with a gambling addiction
Me: A fallen Aasimar Oath of Redemption Paladin that has fallen from grace.
A bit of backstory on this one. Our group had a great time with the first run of Curse of Strahd that Luke did for us, so much so that we wanted to do it again. Luckily, current DM wanted to run Curse of Strahd himself as DM, and through a few days of brainstorming we ended up coming to the idea of doing a continuation of the story. This would allow us to run the module again, but with a LOT of tweaks to characters and stories, such as our characters from the previous run being added as NPCs. The other thing we decided on was everyone had to write a character for the other players. So the three PCs and the DM created three characters each, one for each player complete with backstory. Each player was then given the race and class of the characters created, and they would then choose which one they wanted to try without knowing anything else. A weird idea I know, but it was fun. The unused characters got tossed into a stack as backups if anyone happened to die so you could just be added back into the game without much of a break in the session. They didn't get used luckily, but we were prepared.
I gave the brief description of the characters we ended up with, but I wanna go more in-depth on them here. I got an aasimar paladin who was originally a great warrior in mount celeste. But my greatness was short lived as I fell into the vices of fighting for sport, and my martial prowess allowed me to rise in the ranks of an arena on the material plane. I feared my position would be lost so I resulted to cheating to ensure my victory, which was quickly revealed. I was cast from mount celeste, and had to redeem myself if I wished to ever return. Thus started my Oath. Now I understand that the book says an Oath of Redemption means you firmly believe anyone can be redeemed no matter how evil, but I thought that someone who believed they were the lowest of scum for what they had done would follow such a path. If they could be redeemed, then certainly anyone could.
Luke's player chose the character I made for him, an air genasi rogue. The thing with this guy was that he did his absolute best to never really put in effort on anything. The only time he would act is if his life depended on it, so outside of deadly situations he would just let the other party members deal with the problem. If they asked him to do something, he would often complain that they're more than capable of it themselves, but would quickly relent as the party got frustrated with his actions. He barely even walked anywhere since, as an air genasi, he could levitate at will so he would just lazily drift around the place. He was a bit of a moocher, a leech, simply finding a group of relatively strong looking people and sticking to them so he could do the least work while still getting paid. That wasn't to say he didn't have his own goals. He sought to be famous, and to have people be grateful for the things he did. It's just that he was bad at actually getting things done in the first place. This fit his real world personality very well, as Luke's player himself is extremely lazy and he often admits to this being the case.
Garrett's player also picked the character I made, a half-elf sorcerer. Garrett's player tended to play characters with more simple backstories that seem complicated until you read through them and realize that it boils down to some core basic ideas. His character was a problem gambler. Anytime there was an option to roll the dice and take a chance he would take it. The character frequented betting rings and casinos, and his above average luck kept him in the running until he got on the wrong side of the owners. He got framed for cheating and so the casino bosses, known for not being subtle, were holding his sister hostage until he returned with enough money to pay them back for all of his "winnings".
This party of fools was to be the grand heroes of this adventure, and hoo boy did it not go well.
The DM is relatively new to running games, and considering this I have to say he did a damn good job of pretty much rebuilding the world of Curse of Strahd from scratch. What he didn't have a good handle of was balancing encounters and traps mid combat, especially when dealing with a group whose luck was abysmal like ours was the first few sessions. We skipped the death house and decided to just start off at level 3. The very first combat encounter, before we even get into the land of Barovia, is a choldrith (CR 3) and two zombies (CR 1/4). This was made as a means of us getting used to our characters. We nearly get TPK'd just because we can't hit anything to save our lives, literally, and the choldrith manages to crit on me twice in a row downing me instantly.
This particular encounter sets the tone for almost every encounter afterwards. I could tell the DM was constantly having to fudge rolls and pull punches just to avoid a TPK nearly every step of the way just because our dice rolls wouldn't allow us to have fun. It was frustrating, and that frustration was made well known during the inter-character banter. The rogue would berate me for not managing to land my attack, the sorcerer would shout for the rogue to get off his lazy ass and help for once. Meanwhile I feel like a substitute teacher trying to keep two unruly kids in check and am starting to slowly lose it. At one point I snapped because both in and out of character I'd had enough of an NPCs antics nearly getting us killed.
There's a girl that goes missing from this caravan and you find her drowning in a lake. In our encounter there's a monster down there and she's protected by some trinket she has. However, because of her constant panicking and squirming we can't manage to get her out of the lake successfully. Eventually we just resort to casting sleep on her so she stays still long enough for us to get out before we're murdered. When she wakes up she continues to sob, and I literally shout at her because she put not just herself but also those sent to rescue her in danger. This just made her cry more, so I just cast sleep again and we delivered her back to the caravan.
Eventually though, as we found out what was going on in this world and began to understand who Strahd was, we started to band together as the group of unlikely heroes this world needed. We went through a lot of perils, a lot of problems, and a LOT of near-death experiences. We opened up to each other, learned the reasons behind each other's actions, and came to find that we had much in common and a reason worth fighting for. This led to the all important result of actually supporting each other in combat. We started to feel like a team who watched each other's backs.
I'm gonna skip ahead here and move more towards the end of the campaign. A lot of stuff happens but most of it isn't super necessary and is really just filler.
Some spoilers ahead for the Curse of Strahd module, though the story itself is modified quite a bit.
So by this point we've figured out that Strahd's curse is that he is in essence trapped in this world, constantly reliving his own nightmare for killing his brother and watching his love die by jumping from his castle. Even when he is killed and his entire realm is destroyed, it just reforms again some time later forcing everyone within it to return to their imprisoned life. Strahd is forced to come back time and time again, and at this point it has started to drive him mad. In our story he's been doing this for several thousand years, trying desperately to find a timeline in which Tatiana, the girl that jumped, loves him again.
At this point, the DM does something that I wasn't expecting. We know the madness that Strahd suffers and we've seen what kind of monster he is. He killed more than a dozen children right in front of us while we were helpless to stop him, he's trumped and taunted us at nearly every turn. He has harassed us, and killed NPCs we actually gave a crap about to the point where it would have been justified for any player to just try and kill the guy on sight. And so without any fanfare, Strahd shows up in front of us and invites us to dinner in his castle. He promises our safety, but more importantly, if we did not accept he would attempt to kill us. We were already beaten down pretty hard from a reworked amber temple, and I as the face of the party made the executive decision of "Screw it, having dinner with the BBEG right now sounds like the thing that might not result in our death".
We hop into his cart, and on the way there each of us PCs receive a private message in discord from the DM. I still have that message so I can share it verbatim.
“I have watched you for a long time. I know why you have come here, and what you seek to do. Know that it won’t be easy. I am ancient. I am the land. Barovia is my home, my domain. The Dark Powers keep me here and they keep a tally. Should you try to kill me, I will only return stronger to seek my vengeance against you, as I have done for so many others before you. I have seen your power grow over time. First, a matchstick; now, a roaring fire. But your quest, even in its success, is doomed to failure. Your victory will be short lived. Instead, I offer you something greater. Take a measure of my power and join me, such that we can bring about a new era to this land. You need only drink the White Wine to give your approval and I shall infuse you with my power.”
I don't know what the other players got, but that's what was sent to me. We all got something different.
At this point I had a lot to think about. I thought about everything we'd gone through as a group. I thought about the challenges we'd weathered together. One small part of me wanted to see this thing through to the end, and hope that his warning was just a bluff. But I knew better. My paladin knew better. Strahd never once lied to us, why would he start now? If he's telling the truth, then what's the point of going through all this hell if its just going to end in disappointment and death while the cycle continues? Is giving up all hope and joining the dark side really the best option? I as a player fought with this in my head for a long time, but eventually I came to a decision and formulated a plan.
I picked the white wine. And I was the only one at dinner who had chosen white wine.
Afterwards, Strahd asked to speak with me privately, and this visibly raised a lot of suspicion with the other party members. The DM and I moved to a private area where the other players wouldn't hear the ensuing talks. While Strahd and I wandered through the halls of his castle our conversation went as such.
Strahd: "So, you wish to take up my offer and rule this land by my side?"
Me: "No, not exactly. I'm going to level with you for a moment Strahd. I generally think I've figured out this whole issue. You screwed up, killed Sergei, and now you're stuck here forced to relive the same thing over and over as you try desperately to get what you want. But... As much as I know you don't want to hear it, it's not going to happen."
Strahd's visage visibly darkens, and an angry snarl rings out from him.
Me: "However, I am willing to help you on my own terms."
Strahd: "Which are?"
Me: "Your curse prevents you from leaving, prevents you from dying, and is the one thing that is keeping you and all these people in Barovia locked in this eternal nightmare. If it means releasing you from this hell hole of a dimension and finally giving you some peace, I'm willing to take on the mantle of your curse. I get it. No one likes to hear about their past mistakes, especially me. But its something we've all got to face. No one is above redemption Strahd. Not even you."
Strahd falls silent for awhile as the DM considers what I've just said. I can tell he wasn't prepared for something like this, but the idea has piqued his interest.
Strahd: "Doing this will allow you to take control of this realm, and will result in my death. Among this land and its people, you will learn everything I have done, good and bad. Every single atrocity that I am responsible for. My magical secrets and dark memories, all yours to live with for eternity. Even knowing this burden, one that would bring most men to their knees, would you still continue on with this path?"
Me: "Strahd, you've been watching us since we got here. You know me. You know what I've been through, you know what I've done, and you know what I want to do. I believe you've suffered enough, and even you deserve to rest. I get that some people don't like you, hell some people believe you deserve even worse than what you're currently getting. But forever is a long ass time as I'm sure you know. My hope is that by releasing you from this curse and taking on the burden I can find my own redemption some day."
Strahd thinks on this for a moment, and I'm actually surprised to see something resembling a genuine smile cross his lips.
And so with the entire party present, Strahd performed a ceremonial ritual in which I as a willing recipient took on the mantle of his curse. I became the new Strahd, as he withered away into dust. In that brief flash I watched as families were slaughtered, homes were torched, terrible creatures were risen from the shadows and hundreds of people fell into despair. I watched this cycle again and again, thousands of years passed through my mind in an instant. It was daunting, terrifying, and had I not passed a wisdom save it could have well and truly broken my character's spirit. But despite all this horror, I gleaned one important piece of information.
The heart of the castle. As part of our DM's story rewrite, he made the heart incredibly important as it is where Strahd's will is entombed and where the curse is focused. We as a group have 1 in-game hour before the curse takes hold entirely and I essentially become Strahd reborn, with all the same mannerisms. If within that time we can destroy the heart in the tower, it will trigger a collapse event. After destroying the heart it will create a black hole portal to a void realm. We'll have enough time to escape, but the void will consume the entire demiplane, erasing everything including Strahd's lingering will and all of the people causing their souls to be lost forever. But there's a catch.
If one person's soul of a non-evil alignment of their own free will is swapped with his, the one sacrificing themselves is lost to the void forever, but everyone and everything can escape safely. The portal closes and cannot be found. Barovia will then be sent to a nearby coast town as a new island about 3 miles away from civilization. The one who commits to this sacrifice freely is left alone for all eternity in the infinite void, with nothing but their own thoughts and memories to keep them company. No means exist for this person to escape, and they are lost forever beyond saving. And if they were to do this while carrying the mantle of Strahd's curse, that meant the curse is locked away forever along with them, forever breaking the cycle.
This is all told to me in private, and so I turn to my close friends and allies and tell them I have a way to fix all of this. We have to get to the heart in the tower and destroy it. Doing so will cause the realm to fall apart and release everyone trapped here including us. Garrett and Luke are both down for this, and we set off one final time, determined to save this world.
The fight was treacherous, but through sheer willpower and a bit of wild magic luck we manage to come out on top. The heart shatters, and a black hole begins to steadily grow and consume anything it touches. I shout to the others to get to safety which they promptly start fleeing from the danger. It's at this point the rogue notices that I'm not following. Instead I'm standing there, facing this black void alone. He calls out to me that I need to get the hell out of there and asks what I'm doing. I describe that my character turns his head back solemnly with a contented smile.
"Thank you, my friends. Luke, keep up the good work. And Garrett? Say hello to your sister for me. Goodbye."
And with that, I threw myself into this void, never to be seen again.
The other players were stunned by this as they listened to the DM detail the sudden collapse of the demiplane as it was shifted into another world entirely. Luke, being played by someone who was a big fan of anime tropes, did the sad/angry shout into the emptiness about my character being a moron and how there had to have been a better way. Garrett had a hard time thinking of something to say about this, more focused on trying to not cry.
The two of them go on about their lives, accomplishing the goals that had originally sent them on this path. But by the time it was all over their memory of me had faded significantly. That didn't stop them from trying to find some way of honoring my character though. A bronze plaque sits up in the ruins of the castle where I was last seen.
"Here lies the memory of a stalwart ally and a close friend. May he find the redemption he seeks."
Afterwards, we all concluded that despite a lot of rough patches throughout the entire campaign, the ending was satisfying to each of us in our own ways. It was a fantastic and wild ride, and one of the only times I've ever had a character death that I was well and truly happy about.

The Junk Bond King

Junk bonds are bonds issued by companies with poor credit ratings, such as CCC, as opposed to investment-grade bonds that are issued by companies with a AAA credit rating.

Chronology

His Crimes

The junk bond scheme:
  1. Milken controlled both sides of the deal, he controlled both the lenders and the borrowers.
  2. he controlled the lenders because he controlled a huge network of federally insured Savings and Loan banks, reputable insurance companies, and junk bond funds.
  3. so Milken would then raise money from his network of lenders to buy junk bonds from a junk company (borrower), with the promise that the junk company will use some of that capital to buy junk bonds from other junk companies (borrowers) in Milken’s junk bond empire. This inflated the demand for the junk bonds.
  4. junk bonds yielded Milken a high commission, and Milken would also get equity in the junk companies that he had just financed with capital.
Junk bonds financed corporate raiders, and information about those takeover bids was improperly shared, creating criminal insider trading opportunities.
Milken often tried to get as much as five times the maximum markup on trades that was permitted at the time.
Milken’s friend and business associate, Ivan Boesky:
  1. Ivan Boesky’s conviction of insider trading in 1986 is what lead to Milken’s downfall.
  2. Milken had substantial business dealings with Boesky.
  3. the first lead into Milken’s crimes was a payment of $5.3 million by Ivan Boesky to Drexel Burnham listed as a consultation fee. Boesky told the SEC this payment was for Milken’s profits form an illegal trade.
  4. Boesky implicated milked in insider trading, stock manipulation, fraud, and stock parking.
Milken’s shadow entity, MacPherson Partners:
  1. Drexel’s internal investigation discovered suspicious activity in one of the limited partnerships Milken had set up to allow members of his department to make their own investments called MacPherson Partners.
  2. Members of MacPherson Partners included: Milken, other Drexel Burnham executives, a few high value Drexel Bernham customers, as well as a few managers of money market funds - all friends of Milken.
  3. MacPherson Partners acquired several stock warrant)s for the stock of Storer Broadcasting in 1985. At the time, the powerful private equity firm KKR was in the midst of a leveraged buyout of Storer Broadcasting, and Drexel Burnham was the lead underwriter for the bonds being issued.
  4. One of Drexel Burnham’s other clients bought several Storer Broadcasting warrants and sold them back to the high-yield bond department (controlled by Milken) at Drexel Burnham.
  5. Drexel Burnham’s high-yield bond department in turn sold them to MacPherson Partners (also controlled by Milken).
  6. Those warrants were then handed out by Milken to members of his family, and the money managers bought the warrants for themselves without notifying the clients of the funds they were managing.
  7. By allowing his wealth fund management friends to buy the warrants, Milken was essentially bribing them so they would in turn help him with his junk bond manipulation.

His Trial, Conviction and Sentence

During the trial, Milken spent $3 million a month on his legal defense and an expensive public relations firm.
He ultimately pleaded guilty to 3 counts of securities fraud, 2 counts of tax evasion, and 1 count of conspiracy to commit the other 5 crimes.
Milken was ordered by the court to pay a fine of $200 million and to pay $400 million to defrauded investors.
In a separate civil suit Milken had to pay out an additional $500 million to defrauded investors. Sentenced to 2 years for each of the 5 counts of tax and securities fraud for 10 years total.
When the judge read the sentence, Milken misunderstood and thought he had received 2 years total. After his lawyer told him that he was getting 10 years, the blood drained out of Milken’s face, he took his wife into a witness waiting room, closed the door and let out a blood-curdling scream.

Clemency from President Trump

On February 18, 2020 Trump granted clemency to Milken, although his lifetime ban from the securities industry is still in effect.
America’s Secretary of the Treasury, Steve Mnuchin, is longtime pals with Milken, and was the prime mover in convincing President Trump to pardon him. Mnuchin has flown on Milken’s private jet.
Another fat cat advocating for Milken was Nelson Peltz, who has raised over $10 million for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign.
And don’t forget Trump's fattest fat cat, Sheldon Adelson, who also advocated on behalf of Milken.
Many powerful figures in high finance came together to lobby the White House on behalf of Milken, including:
  1. Sheldon Adelson: a major Republican donor and Trump supporter, Adelson is the chief executive officer of casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp.
  2. David Bahnsen: a former Morgan Stanley managing director and wealth management executive who wrote Trump in 2017 urging him to pardon Milken, calling the junk bond king’s prosecution a result of “a period of class envy run amok.”
  3. Tom Barrack: the chief executive officer and chairman of Colony Capital Inc., Barrack is long-time Trump ally. He faced a call from an investor in November to step down in part over distractions from investigations into his political and personal activities.
  4. Rupert Murdoch: a powerful media mogul and longtime Trump ally who put the power of News Corp. behind the president.
  5. Maria Bartiromo: a popular anchor on Fox Business, Bartiromo has interviewed Milken as recently as 2018 (and has also interviewed Trump). The network is part of Murdoch’s media empire.
  6. Ron Burkle: a billionaire investor who controls Yucaipa Cos., Burkle made his fortune in the grocery-store industry. Burkle, a Democratic fund-raiser famous for his friendship with Bill Clinton, made news last year when he was rumored to be interested in acquiring the Trump-friendly National Enquirer.
  7. Elaine Chao: the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Chao was a key speaker at the Milken Global Conference last year, where she spoke about the future of mobility as well as women in government. She’s married to Republican Senate Majority Leader and top Trump ally Mitch McConnell.
  8. Rudy Giuliani: Trump’s personal lawyer, the former New York mayor has lately been embroiled in the Ukraine scandal. As chief federal prosecutor in New York in the 1980s, Giuliani sought to prosecute Milken.
  9. Rabbi Marvin Hier: dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Hier was invited by Trump to speak at his inauguration. The rabbi in 2018 called on Trump to fight extremism in the U.S. after a shooting at a synagogue.
  10. Ray Irani: chairman and chief executive officer of Ray Investments Ltd. and former CEO of Occidental Petroleum, Irani stepped down as a board member at Wynn Resorts Ltd. following a sexual harassment scandal involving company founder Steve Wynn.
  11. Robert Kraft: owner of the New England Patriots and a longtime Trump supporter.
  12. Richard LeFrak: a billionaire developer and Republican donor, LeFrak appeared in a 2010 episode of Trump’s reality TV show “The Apprentice.”
  13. Randy Levine: the president of the New York Yankees and a longtime supporter of Republican politicians, including Trump.
  14. Kevin McCarthy: a Republican congressman from California, McCarthy is the House Minority Leader and a longtime Trump supporter.
  15. Larry Mizel: chairman and CEO of home-builder MDC Holdings Inc.
  16. Arte Moreno: owner of the Anaheim Angels, which he purchased from The Walt Disney Co. in 2003
  17. Sean Parker: Napster co-creator and Facebook Inc. billionaire who has attended the annual Milken Institute Global Conference.
  18. John Paulson: founder and owner of Paulson & Co., a New York-based investment adviser that manages about $9 billion, Paulson is best-known for making $15 billion in 2007 on a bet against mortgage bonds.
  19. Nelson Peltz: founder and chief executive officer of Trian Fund Management LP, Peltz is well-known as an activist investor in companies like Wendy’s and Dupont.
  20. Steven Roth: chairman and chief executive officer of Vornado Realty Trust, a REIT that holds more than 22 million square feet in commercial property, mainly in New York.
  21. David Rubenstein: co-chairman and co-founder of The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm with $222 billion in assets under management.
  22. Larry Ruvo: senior managing director of Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada, the state’s largest liquor wholesaler.
  23. Marc Stern: the chairman of TCW Group Inc. hosted a $10,000 per person fund-raiser for Trump at his Malibu home in 2018 attended by Vice President Mike Pence.
  24. Steven Tananbaum: the founder and chief investment officer of GoldenTree Asset Management LP, one of Wall Street’s biggest investors in distressed debt.
  25. Ted Virtue: the chief executive officer of MidOcean Partners, the middle-market private equity and credit firm, who previously oversaw Deutsche Bank AG’s $35 billion direct investment portfolio.
  26. Andrew von Eschenbach: a U.S. Food and Drug Administration chief under President George W. Bush, he now serves on the board of Bausch Health Cos.
  27. Mark Weinberger: the chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young LLP, Weinberger quit Trump’s business council after the Charlottesville white supremacists rally but later dined with the president.

Conclusion

Milken likes to tell his life story as a smart guy who grew up wanting to be a scientist and lead America in the space race, but after his first year in college the Watts riots happened and it made him rethink his life. After talking with a Black man who told him that he couldn’t get access to capital because he was Black, Milken decided he would dedicate his life to making sure people with ability would have access to capital.
So Milken changed from a science major to finance, went to business school, made $billions on Wall Street all so he could help Black people?
There are plenty of people who in part owe their wealth to Milken and his junk bonds, and these people heap praise on Milken saying he created a lot of wealth in America and helped society tremendously.
The wealth, though, went to those people heaping the praise!
As for the companies Milken financed helping society, it would be difficult to argue that case. The big name companies that were financed by Milken include: CNN, Rupert Murdoch’s empire, Wynn casinos, Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital, etc.
Milken was not helping society, he was helping people on Wall Street get rich.
Government watchdogs are usually too weak to take on the crimes of the super rich, because the government watchdog worker still gets paid whether for not the Wall Street crook gets busted.
There is no incentive to play by the rules.
Milken has done a lot of philanthropic work especially in regards to cancer research with that $2.5 billion he had leftover after getting out of prison, although he hasn’t given away that much money considering his net worth in 2020 is $3.8 billion.
What I find most fascinating about the Milken story is the power of his public relations machine. All the major media outlets cast Milken as a philanthropist and not a criminal.
Another sign of the overwhelming influence of the wealthy on the American zeitgeist.

Best Places to Visit in France. If You had travel France how was your experience as a tourist.

Best Places to Visit in France. If You had travel France how was your experience as a tourist.
  1. Paris 📷 It could not be possible to write about travel in France, without stating any of the Paris tourist places? From the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Musee d’Orsay to Notre Dame Cathedral, Ile de la Cité, and Moulin Rouge, the French capital houses some of the most visited tourist attractions in Europe. Originally a tiny island on the Seine River, today Paris has evolved into a traveller’s delight. While it’s a good idea to opt for a Paris tour package that covers all the highlights of Paris tourism, do remember to spare some time to simply soak in the spirit of the place. Because, honestly, there’s no place quite like Paris!

  1. Pont du Gard 📷 The Pont du Gard, South of France, is probably one of the most famous Roman monuments outside of Rome. This extraordinary Roman aqueduct is located just north of Nimes. The Pont du Gard is one of 4 UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the South of France. Complete with an excellent visitors centre and Mediterranean garden, the Pont du Gard, is a special place to visit in France. One of my favourite days out with the kids is head off to the beautiful town of Uzes, 15kms to the west of the Pont du Gard. We like to potter around in the town and grab some lunch in one of the pavement restaurants in the main square.
  2. The Gorges du Verdon 📷 Europe’s answer to the grand canyon, this deep cliff gorge located in the Provence region is a visitor hot spot. Here you’ll find bright turquoise green waters, outstanding scenery and an abundance of wildlife – it’s not difficult to see why this gorge is so popular. Easily accessible from the French Riviera, the national park is a great spot to climb, hike, kayak or just go for a scenic drive.
  3. Provence To witness gorgeous stretches of lavender flowers and lush olive groves, head to Provence, one of the most famous regions in France. If time is not a constraint, it’s recommended that you spend a couple of serene hours at the Sénanque Abbey, a 12th-century church near Gordes. And then, there are tourist trips to picturesque villages of Baux-de-Provence, St. Rémy, and Avignon. You’ll see imposing mountains, magnificent ancient architecture, and, yes, many, many vineyards!

  1. Monte Carlo 📷 I know it is not strictly French, but you have to include Monte Carlo, Monaco in any list of places to visit in France. This tiny but wealthy Principality, covering just one square mile, is the World's smallest Sovereign state after the Vatican. When the state was faced with bankruptcy in 1848, the then Prince of Monaco (Charles III), decided to open a casino. The profits of the famous casino soon proved to be so large that all taxes were abolished and the grateful citizens renamed the hill by the casino 'Monte Carlo' (Mount Charles). Today it is a glitzy place, home of not just the rich and famous but also a legendary Grand Prix. If you get beyond all the enormous yachts and showy jewellery shops, I have always found Monte Carlo quite pleasant to walk around and not too expensive. The view from the top of the Monte Carlo hill up near the castle is absolutely amazing.
  2. Giverny 📷 Giverny is a riverside rural idyll located on the borders of Normandy which is most famous for being the birthplace of impressionism. The small village was once Claude Monet’s cherished country retreat and now both his pink shutterboard house and highly photogenic country gardens are open to the public. Planted by Monet himself, the walled water garden (which inspired so many of his famous paintings) features white and purple wisterias, water lilies, weeping willows, bamboo and the iconic green Japanese bridge.
  3. Annecy 📷 Which is the most photogenic place in France? It’s a tough call, but many would vouch for Annecy, popularly known as the ‘Venice of Savoie’. Peppered with small canals and a 14th-century Chateau (Palais de l’Isle) right at the centre, Annecy is the kind of place that has managed to stay untouched by time. As you walk down the narrow cobbled streets in the old town, surrounded by a huge lake and snowy mountains, you’ll understand why Annecy is so special.
  4. Strasbourg 📷 Located right on the border of Germany and France this heritage city has distinct characteristics of both countries. It’s a picturesque, almost twee town radiating an old world charm which really draws the visitors. Famous for its riverfront half-timbered houses, beautiful gothic cathedral and fondness for flowers, it also makes a great base for those wishing to visit the nearby Black Forest or the River Rhine.
  5. Nice Cannes 📷 If you think of the South of France, then Nice and Cannes spring automatically to mind. Along the 120km coast of the Cote d'Azur, there are many places to stop off and enjoy, such as St Tropez (see below), Frejus, Sainte-Maxime, Cap Ferrat and Cassis; but Cannes with its international film festival and Nice with its exotic buildings and promenade have the wow factor. With its broad avenues, wide sweeping bay and golden beach it is not difficult to see why some 3 million people flock to Nice every year. The long sweep of the Baie des Anges is a magnificent beach, bordered by the Promenade des Anglais - named after the first tourists who came here in the late 18th century and began to transform this once sleepy fishing port into the Mediterranean's premier resort. Only Paris rivals it as a tourist attraction. Equally so, Cannes with its 3 local beaches, narrow streets and celebrity visitors is an excellent base for exploring the South of France.
  6. Mont Saint-Michel Second only to the Eiffel Tower as France’s best-loved landmark, Mont St-Michel is rocky, peaked island which is connected by a causeway to northwest France. An imposing sight sitting amid sandbanks and powerful tides, the heritage site is most celebrated for its Gothic-style Benedictine abbey. Directly below the grand monastery is a medieval village complete with winding streets, small houses and souvenir shops. The island is accessible at all times except when the tide is very high.
